| WESTONE MOLDS - Single / Dual / 3 Way Drivers |
Thanks for the interest in the Westone in ear monitor custom Molds. Molds are a bit of a mystery so I’ve “Ingeniated” a way to get it done pretty easy. There are four mold options available in the Freq City Sound eBay store. The ES1 is the single driver IEM mold. The ES2 is a dual driver (adds a cross over and a bass speaker to the UM1) and the ES3 a three way driver that adds a mid. There is also the UM56 which is a molded sleeve shape to fit a variety of Makes and models with stem sizes similar to the UM1 and UM2 IEM’s. If you wish to move forward on any of the following, here’s how we’d do it. First step is to get impressions made by an ear doctor in your area. Ear Doctors normally charge about $20 an ear to make the impressions. Tell the ear Doctor that you want to schedule an appointment to have impressions made for in ear monitors. When you’re in the ear docs chair tell them “past the second bend and open mouth”. Be ready with the line “The IEM’s have already been purchased – I just need the impressions” because the ear doc will want the deal. (The ear docs are swell people. It was my experience when I first got in to molds that most of them haven’t been on a stage in front of a Marshall stack to talk my language when questions came up down the road). We’ll have you send your impressions directly to Westone. I’ll fax in the purchase order with all the information Westone needs to make your molds. When the molds are completed, Westone will ship them directly to you (also saves time). Turn around time at Westone once they have the PO and impressions, is normally a week and always under two (to build the molds). Over-seas buyers use $30 as a ship cost. I’ll mail using the US post office express mail. It’s track-able and takes under a week (they say 4 days). US buyers $15 for an express service. I have the molds listed with Paypal. I can also take Visa/MasterCard on the phone or money orders and bank checks. Give me a call or email and we'll work it out. Any/all questions; mike@freqcitysound.com or my cell is 513-375-3302 Westone’s address to send your impressions:
Westone 2235 Executive Circle Colorado Springs, CO 80906 Attn: Joan Gow
In the box, put a note to Joan and let her know that you’re working with Frequency City Sound. Joan will pair your impressions with Freq City’s Purchase Order.

Do I want/need molds or will stock IEM’s work for me?
There are Pro and Cons for you to ponder. The benefits on molds are also the negatives. That is; the isolation is the real deal. All you hear is what's fed in to the mold (good or bad). Also the monitor is positioned in your ear in the perfect spot every night (real good). I notice guys with out the molds adjusting from time to time to find the perfect listening position. If you have a full time dedicated monitor engineer there's no doubt a mold is the way to go. If you do not, the UM2 as is will probably work best. You'll still be isolated but you'll be able to pick up other stuff/instruments enough that are not in your mix. With a mold if another player looks right at your face and yells a song change - you will not hear him. With the UM2 with comply tips - he'll be distant but you'll hear him. I use the Westone ES3 three way molds while performing shows. Our monitor engineer sits at a 40X12 Crest board and feeds me signal at my every whim. At band practice I use the UM2. We're aux sending to the ears, the mix is so-so (not a guy sitting at the board) and I need to be able to pick up some instruments that we're not mic-ing and sending to the ear mix. I'll also pull the UM2 out of my ears from time to time if some ones talking who doesn't have a mic (not being fed to the ear mix). Molds have to be lubricated and put in with care - slowly. They also come out slowly. The UM2 with tips is fast in and fast out. Bottom line; my opinion - if you have a dedicated monitor engineer or you have the ability to access your individual mix at any time let's talk molds. If you're given a mix and then pretty much run with it, go with the UM1 or UM2 as is. Feel free to phone if I've confused the issue here.

Please Note: The ES3 features an intentional bump in the midrange frequency response that is of great benefit to vocalists and guitarists who perform onstage. Therefore, the ES3 is not the best choice for listening to recorded music. If this is your goal, you'll be more interested in the ES2 or ES1.
